Consistency
is the product.

A retail buyer is not really buying a cucumber. They are buying the assurance that next week's cucumbers will look like this week's, arrive on the same day, in the same count per crate, at a price agreed in advance.

That is where hydroponics earns its keep. Our crops grow in recirculating NFT channels and drip-fed substrate under shade netting — nutrients dosed automatically, EC and pH checked daily, water use cut by 70–85% against open field. Precise control is what produces uniform grade-out, week after week, and grading discipline rejects anything that would have passed on a looser standard.

It also means being honest about a short season. We would rather tell a buyer in advance that a line is finishing than quietly send them something that is not what they ordered.

From channel
to shelf.

Produce is picked, moved out of field heat quickly, graded and packed on site. Each batch carries a record of the channel or bed it grew in, the date it was cut, and the team that packed it. The growing protocols behind that record — nutrient solutions, irrigation scheduling, pest scouting — are designed and monitored by our Technical Director, Dr Rykie van der Westhuizen.

We are an active supplier to Freshmark, the fresh produce division of Shoprite Holdings, with cold-chain delivery to its distribution centre — and to SPAR Overberg stores directly, grown here and positioned as locally grown.

The traceability record is not there for a certificate on a wall. It is there so that when something goes wrong — and in fresh produce, eventually something does — we can find out exactly where and fix it, rather than guess.
